Discipleship

Being a Christian is not an event but a process: a disciple is literally a ‘learner’ – someone who, having turned to Christ, continues to grow and mature in their faith. And the purpose of this is to become more wholesome as a human being, growing in the potential of the person God created us to be. This happens as we each seek God personally and learn to live together as companions on the journey of faith and discipleship. Through a balanced programme of Bible teaching, training, nurture and prayer, we aim to help each other in the process of Christian growth.   We also strongly encourage personal discipleship: listening, reading and reflecting.  We then come together to ask the questions ‘what has God been saying to you and what might he be asking you to do about it?’  A ‘disciple’ is a learner, a student, an apprentice – a practitioner, even if only a beginner (Dallas Willard) and we are keen to encourage constant movement in our journey of discipleship.

We also strongly believe that discipleship and mission are two sides of the same coin.  We therefore encourage groups to have a shared outward focus, to be intentionally missional (this doesn’t mean we all have to be evangelists but we are encouraged to be prayerful and intentional in our missional calling).

Discipleship involves a ‘journey’ but you do not need to travel alone. There are a number of possibilities available at ABC to aid you in your ongoing walk with God, including joining a small group or a missional community.

From the Discipleship Training being implemented throughout ABC we have produced 3 leaflets for use within your groups.
